    PACIFIC NORTHWEST NATIONAL LABORATORY
A Peek into the Exciting and Remarkable Research Leading to a Cleaner, Sustainable and Robust Energy Future

    Dr. Jian Zhang
Group Leader, Building Simulation and Design Group
    Pacific Northwest National Laboratory

The United States Department of Energy has 17 national laboratories around the country, including one in our own backyard. Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) in Richland, Washington conducts ground-breaking research on possible solutions and adaptations for our energy future.  Dr. Jian Zhang will present some of the innovative work that PNNL and other labs are doing to address energy storage, innovation in building design, carbon sequestration, and energy grid management.

PNNL, located in Richland, Washington is one of the United States Department of Energy (DOE) national laboratories. It is a legacy of the World War II-era Manhattan Project when the Hanford Site was established to produce plutonium for nuclear weapons. Today the lab is now known for its multidisciplinary research and development efforts in energy, the environment, national security, and fundamental science.

In 2007, more than 20 PNNL scientists were recognized for their contributions to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) that received the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize in equal parts with former Vice President Al Gore. Pacific Northwest National Laboratory continues to play a crucial role in advancing scientific knowledge, developing innovative technologies, and addressing complex challenges facing the nation and the world. For further information about PNNL, please go to their website: https://www.pnnl.gov/

Dr. Jian Zhang, is a PNNL Chief Research Engineer who researches building energy modeling, building energy codes, and energy efficiency. He is the Group Leader for the Building Simulation & Design Group in the Electricity Infrastructure and Buildings Division. Jian joined PNNL in 2009 after completing his Ph.D. degree in Building Engineering at Concordia University, Montreal, Canada. He has been a primary architect of PNNL’s prototype building model infrastructure to support the Building Energy Codes Program. Dr. Zhang is an Editorial board member of the Journal of Building Physics.
