Attorney General Dan Rayfield opens Salem City Club’s fall schedule of programs on September 12 with an official recognition of Democracy Day 2025 (internationally celebrated on September 15) and an update on his efforts to protect Oregon’s interests in challenging federal government overreach.
As Oregon’s 18th Attorney General, Rayfield recognizes the importance of a democratic form of government and the rule of law. As head of the Oregon Department of Justice, Rayfield has been traveling the state, hosting “federal oversight” town halls and as of mid-August, he has filed his 37th lawsuit against the federal administration.
Rayfield has joined a coalition of other state attorneys general in filing dozens of lawsuits asserting that federal actions violate Congressional statutes or the Constitution. Notably, Attorney General Rayfield is lead counsel challenging President Trump’s tariffs, on the basis that the authority to impose such tariffs lies with Congress.
Attorney General Rayfield will discuss what success or failure in these lawsuits mean for Oregonians as the program focuses on federal cuts that have included the areas of healthcare, environmental protections, LGBTQ+ rights, grants, federal workers, veterans, education, and victims of crime.
