Salem for Refugees:

The new faces in your neighborhood are looking for friendship and help in navigating the many challenges in their new world.

Speakers: Toc Soneulay-Gillespie, Doug and Anya Holcomb

More than 100 refugees have been re-located in the Salem area in the last year from such war-torn countries as Iraq, Somalia, Syria, Bhutan, Burma and the Democratic Republic of the Congo plus others fleeing religious and civic persecution from Iran and Cuba. Most have spent years being vetted by government authorities, while living in temporary camps, before being allowed to seek permanent refuge in the United States of America.

Toc Soneoulay-Gillespie, director of Refugee Resettlement, Catholic Charities of Oregon, will join Doug and Anya Holcomb, co-directors of Salem for Refugees, and a representative of the refugee population, to explain the program and how members of the community can help by joining resource focus teams in the areas of housing, healthcare, education, employment, English and cultural navigation (orientation).
