Salem City Club is pleased to present a special summer program, Total Solar Eclipse…Totally Awesome, for our members and the broader Salem-Keizer community. The program will delve into the essential elements of a total solar eclipse and why eclipses, especially total solar eclipses like the one visible in Salem, are important and exciting events.

Many people in the community may remember the last total solar eclipse visible from Salem on February 26,1979. The hype surrounding that eclipse was more subdued, perhaps because of the relatively smaller Oregon viewing area, the time of year and expected weather, but this year it seems everyone is making preparations for this big occasion and hoping for clear skies.

Oregon is expecting 1,000,000 visitors for the total solar eclipse. Given the excitement and rarity of these events, Salem City Club wants to provide information to make viewing of the solar eclipse more meaningful. Oregon will start the “wave of excitement” which will continue for about 90 minutes as the rest of the country gets their chance to view this incredible heavenly phenomenon.

Daniel Adamo, an astrodynamics consultant focused on space mission trajectory design, operations, and architecture, will be our speaker for the evening. He works with clients primarily at NASA and in academia.

Until retirement in 2008, Adamo was employed by United Space Alliance as a trajectory expert, serving as a “front room” flight controller for 60 Space Shuttle missions. Along with console duties during simulations and missions, this job entailed development of trajectory designs, software tools, flight rules, console procedures, and operations concepts. Adamo began his career at the Perkin-Elmer Corporation where he developed and operated proof-of-concept software for computer-controlled polishing of optical elements. He has degrees in Physical Sciences and Optical Engineering from the University of Houston and the University of Rochester, respectively.

Adamo is a Senior Member and Distinguished Lecturer of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) and the author of many publications. He has received numerous awards, including 14 NASA Group Achievement Awards.
